I also think these problems may be due more to
focusing errors than anything else. In all the tests
I've seen, the Zeiss lenses are focused manually of
course. But I don't know about the EF lenses. If they
are being AFed for the test then the test is invalid.
All the MFGs accept that AF is not quite as much on
the money as MFing the same lens. But Canon seems to
have some big problems in this regard. My EOS digital
rebel can't focus any of my lenses properly. The 1Ds I
just got can't either. The thing I've noticed that
bugs meore than everything else, is that the same
camera and lens on a tripod pointed at the same target
will give different readings if you actuate the AF via
the shutter release several times. Initially I thought
it was a settling down sort of problem and after
tapping the release a few times the lens had homed in.
But later I noticed that the first tap is sometimes
the best one. Naturally, the thing has me going nuts.
Originally I had felt the 1Ds would be a solution to
my "cheap EOS AF problems" but no. I searched for AF
issues on dpreview and they acknowledge that there is
some sort of inconsistency but I couldn't find out if
it was an actual problem or just the nature of the
technology. Anyway, I've had to settle for shooting at
less than full aperturre which kinda sucks if you paid
more for a fast zoom. The problem seems to be worse
close up and at wider angles. All I can say is that if
this is not a problem byut rather simply the way
things are, then EOSes are useless as AF cameras! For
some reason though. I don't remember having any of
these issues with any of my earlier EOSes: 6x0 1 1n or
rebel X. Any ideas or info on this would be real
helpful.
