Do you live in a very dusty area, or carry your lens over bumpy tracks with the camera switched on? I believe that the mechanism is supposed to be "caged" when off, so as to protect the delicate parts. I've had mine for a similar period, and whilst it hasn't had too much use since I went digital, it was working fine a few weeks ago. (Except that on my 5D it wasn't really sharp when printed to A3. I'm getting better fullframe results from my original EF28-80 f3.5-5.6 USM, but that leaves quite a gap between 80 and 135!)
