Many thanks to all of you who have responded, it turns out the solution for
the short term is as simple as Harman Bajwa first suggest with the rename
DOS command.

I did a quick test just now and it worked like a charm, all I have to do is
to stuff a copy of all the files I need to rename in a temporary folder and
"ren" them all.

At a later time I may choose to rename the files to a different length by
tagging additional identifier to the front of the original file names, this
WILL require many of the utilities you folks have suggested.
