Jim, I've had to get 2 of my lenses repaired for broken focusing. An EF 35 f2 and a 50 f1.4. Both similar age and design, and were in heavy use and carried in a lightly padded bag, but I never recall either getting thumped. In view of their design, I'm now carrying them with their lens hoods mounted (even in the bag) as this ensures that any shock is taken by the mount and not by the focus system.
