apologies not needed. I was indeed talking the f/4 IS, but in either case, 
despite the weight I
still think the f/2.8 is the better choice. Ok, granted, you can carry the 
lighter one in the
field for full daylight shooting on a pack trip, but you're hiking during the 
day... it's only at
dawn and dusk that you're relaxed enough to enjoy your surroundings (in the 
right light, of
course). And, with a full pack of Canon gear these days, it weighs close to 40 
pounds anyway. So,
what's a gram or two difference when you want your best tools with you. (of 
course I realize that
on a pack trip you wouldn't take all your gear... but I never leave home 
without the 2.8.)
