I agree that the lens plays its part - but only in
moving its elements (ie the motor being able to follow
the instructions from the camera properly - the
software you mention) back and forth and that is just
about it. 

If the lens is unable to move its elements back and
forth it is a bad lens. However, even with hand you
should be able to focus the lens. I just don't get
when people say "the lens does not focus properly". I
would rather ask:

Is there sufficient light/contrast for the lens to
allow focus ?
