I pulled out my 50/1.4 EF lense this AM, and found that the inside ring
(what the lense elements are mounted to) DOES in fact have some excessive
(IMO) play. But, the outer ring, what the lense shade mounts to, has
absolutely none.
To Austin and the group,
When I wrote "loose front element", I really did mean the front focusing
cell.
Now that Austin explains how the 50mm f1.4 lens shade mounts to the
non-movable lens body, I understand why the tech rep told me not to use a
bellows lens shade. The Canon shade does not engage this loose cell so it is
free to float through its focusing range. Canon knew it had a problem with
this lens design and did a work-around with the shade. I still don't like
it, but I now understand the situation.
To Peter K, I found a very inexpensive Nikon lens to Canon body adapter on
eBay. I know that there are a few companies making these small devices for
big bucks, but I bought a few in the $25 range. They are like white box
specials; mine has an "FS" in a circle. If anyone is interested, I will try
to find the vendor.
