Subject: RE: 50 f1.4 - EOS EF 135mm f/2L
Hi,
My few month old 50/1.4 EF lense does in fact have some, IMO, excessive
play
in the front inner barrel, the one the lense element(s) is/are mounted to.
The outer barrel, the one the shade mounts to, has none what so ever. So,
I
can confirm what Stan says, and frankly, I've never seen a lense with play
like this, unless something was wrong.
I wonder if anyone has a 50/1.4 EF that doesn't have any of this play?
Regards,
Austin
I've just checked my EF 50 f1.4 which I had repaired (by Canon UK) for AF
motor problems about two years ago, and which hasn't seen that much use
since. (The repair seemed to cure the well advertised purple fringing effect
at full aperture as well.)
There's a little play of the optical cell in my lens, more than on an MF
Canon FD or Nikkor AIs lens from around 20 years ago, but the whole cell
(front to rear element) moves slightly* with marginally more movement at the
outer end, so element to element centring isn't a problem.
*It's so slight that I'd need to set up a clock gauge to measure it. Which
I've now done - the slop at the outer element end is around 0.05mm to 0.1mm
at right angles to the lens axis. There must be some grease in there as it
doesn't return exactly to its original setting.
