Folks,
For me it worked fine. I loved it. And it was really the only way to use the 45 points! I can not believe that the people who bought 1V or 3 would just use the middle point or *gasp* automatic selection - but that's what they did. ECF really was the only way to use those points. And I loved using the points in the corners - I just wish they would have been even further away :-) The 5D for example, still doesn't have as useable coverage in the corners.
I've shot some hockey games. Amateur college stuff. I started out with a 10D + 70-200/2.8 IS. Most of the shots were out of focus. I read the manual... It turns out that with AI Servo focus, the camera will use one of the focus points to establish initial focus. When the subject moves off that initial point, the camera will try to track it once it is covered by the next focus point. The number of points and their location is just such that that the camera usually ends up focusing on the background and tracking it. Not the best if you're trying to get pictures of hockey players... I rented a 1D II for kicks and was blown back by the results. The big cloud of 45 focus points does an amazing job at tracking focus. I find it works really well with the 1.3x sensor as the focus sensor covers a larger part of the frame as opposed to a full-frame body. It's the same sensor as used in the 1V, 1Ds, etc. But in the 1D it covers a smaller sensor. It's actually possible to do rule-of-thirds compositions on auto-focus. What a concept. I ended up getting a 1D II N last summer. Haven't looked back. Have no regrets. The other thing I really appreciate about the 1-series is the viewfinder. I like that I can focus accurately manually. With my 10D it was more trial and error. I compared the 20D, 30D, 5D, 10D, 1D II N in the store. The focusing screen is cut different in the 1-series. For me it makes it much easier to focus manually. Makes a big difference both for wide-angle work and for macro.
