'morning Bob,

Problem is PDF files are already compressed, you only reduce the size by a
few bytes when you zip it Specifically the Capers file went from 1.723kb
to
1.677kb. It is 16 pages with color photos and/or clip art on many pages,
the original MS Publisher file is over 10mb.

Even with a dialup connection, it should not have taken 20+ mins to
download
a meg and a half, assuming that you're connecting at somewhere between
40kbps and 56kbps. Even a 28.8 connection should download 1.7mb in
~12mins.
You could try "right click" on the link and "save target as" and download
the file before opening acrobat. Not that I believe that Acrobat would
cause a problem, but it just doesn't give any feedback other than an hour
glass. At least the download dialogue gives some information about time
remaining (of course, we know it's not accurate). I guess what I am
saying
is that, if after 20mins you didn't have that file, there may have been
contributing factors, such as poor connection, server load, etc.

But with that said, it is a large file. I will be trying to compress it
further with the PDF creator. Short of removing all the pictures/graphics
from the MS Publisher file, reducing the resoluton of each, and then
reassembling the newsletter back in Publisher before converting to PDF, I
don't expect that I will be able to shink it to much further. I'd love to
be able to create a fat version for those with broandband and a low-res
version for those on dial-up, this was a first shot, I'll continue to try
to
make it easier to download.

capers to make it download properly in a reasonable length of time I
waited 20 minutes and it still didnt download . I have Adobe 5 and dont
usually have any problems downloading large files.
