Linda, Thank you for good sound advise. I would not do an "on-the-spot-purchase". I don't do that with cars either, even if I love the car. A specific amount of money would be exchanged to make the deal "legal and binding" with the understanding that say that EVERYTHING would have to be checked out prior to the sale being finalized. If the deal can not be finalized then the earnest money is returned. That would include a inspection of the craft by a certified pro who's business it is, is to know, ($300.00 for the last inspection I had done). As well as every "I" dotted and every "T" crossed properly, "paperwork wise" which would include AOPA. I think that if I had a sound Ercoupe, I would like to fly medicine into areas where it is desperately need in an effort to help people. Maybe in Mexico, or Central America. Help those people who want to get on their feet and make / build a life for themselves. Grab that reached out hand and give them a lift up, say a prayer for them, turn them around, aim them in the right direction and say vomanois! (Not sure of the spelling of that last word). You never know until then what glitches may appear that are not apparent from the FAA disk. AOPA's title folks will do a fast turnaround...but not quite on-the-spot-purchase fast. (For an example of what can turn up: my 'Coupe's seller purchased it, he said, from a parting-out yard that didn't want to part out this one. But the reg documents showed his title chain as coming from a private party, who turned out to be the owner *before the yard*! When the FAA wrote prior owner and said "where's your reg slip?" he replied that he'd sold to a *parting out dealer* -- not to my seller. Turns out the prior owner had given the yard a blank bill of sale, but had failed to turn in his old registration signed off. So until the record was cleaned up, it looked for a while like the prior owner could have sold twice: once to my seller, and once to the parting-out dealer. Had it not been cleaned up, could have clouded title if/when I ever re-sell...not that I would, of course. ) Linda From: Ercoupe Hangar Flying <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2007 00:00:07 -0800 To: Ercoupe Hangar Flying <[email protected]> Subject: Digest list: Ercoupe Hangar Flying ---------------------------- From: "Ed Burkhead" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'Gonzalez, Robert'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,"Cflyin" <[email protected]> Reply-To: "Ed Burkhead" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: RE: [COUPERS-FLYIN] RE: Digest list: Ercoupe Hangar Flying Besides what Lynn said, beware of "rush" situations when buying a plane. At a fly-in or convention, there's pressure to buy on the spot. But how can you * Get the FAA CD disk of all the paperwork and look through it for problems such as model D conversion? * Get a mechanic to do a good pre-purchase inspection? Those two things are, IMHO, essential to the airplane buying process and should never be skipped.
