I have a 1946 coupe s/n 2862 and I can't find the mystery part on my
plane.
Was this added onto later planes or is mine missing?

I have been using Lexan for years and am very happy with it. I just saw my
previous Ercoupe that I put it into over 10 years ago and the windows
still
look great. In fact I specifically asked them if they had changed the
windows and they said no. I did line the slot that the windows go into
with
felt or crushed velvet so they do get scratched. The only thing I do not
particularly like is that because it is more flexible you do have to be
careful leaning or pushing on them. I don't remember what thickness I used
on the other Ercoupe but I used .060 this time. Maybe .080 would have been
a
better choice for the rear windows. Lexan is cheap so even if you scratch
them and change them every couple years it is no big deal because it is so
easy to work with.

Question:

Would there be any harm in replacing my side and rear windows with 1/8"
lexan instead of 1/4" plexiglass?

We thought we had it identified, but we don't.

Take a look at: http://www.bullough.org/mysterypart.html

Pete Hogan got this back with his Alon engine after a rebuild.

We thought it might be a front-left baffle piece, but it's smaller.

It doesn't actually seem to fit anywhere.

One theory is that it was on the bench at the engine shop and was assumed
to be part of Pete's engine...but wasn't.

Anybody recognize this piece?

Greg

It looks sort of like the piece that goes under the Cylinders, beside
the carburetor, in front of the oil tank. I think its function would be
to direct air across the oil tank. However, I do not remember the large
hole visible in the left bottom corner of the piece.

Greg,

I have all of those old original service letters and I was looking
through them the other day...... it looks like part of what they called
an oil cooler. My service letters are at work so I cant look until next
week

 Greg,
It's the left forward baffle just below and forward of #4
cylinder.
It covers the area between the nose bowl and engine case, from the case
half
to the base of #4 cylinder. I'm presently qoing through my annual and I
see
that part just like your picture. Just to be sure I'll look first thing
tomorrow and get the exact mounting location for you.

That part is a piece of baffling that goes on the front of the engine,
left
hand side, just aft of the prop flange. The small hole goes under a nut
on
a
crankcase flange bolt just below the prop flange, and the large hole goes
under
a palnut on the cylinder base stud.

Best Regards,

Wayne
