I don't think there is any sport pilot requirement for the CFI. I believe
any CFI can instruct you and get you ready for the sport pilot check ride.
You are correct that there are only a few sport pilot examiners so far
though that can give you your flight exam but your scenario of a local CFI
getting you ready for the check ride and signing you off for solo should
be
completely legal. Everyone gets signed off for solo before they are ready
for the test be it private, recreational or sport. There is a new sport
pilot instructor rating but that is for people that will only be able to
instruct for the sport pilot license. A CFI that is rated to instruct for
private should be able to instruct for a lower rating like recreational
and
sport. This is the same as a pilot that is rated for private is allowed to
fly as sport because it is a lower rating. Anyway that is my take on it
but
I would call the EAA or AOPA for clarification.

Hi, thanks for writing back.

Nope; my military time won't count: no logs. I could "attest-certify" the
time, but the insurance people get very antsy about that kind of flight
time, and in my income bracket I want
to keep the insurance wolves very happy and satisfied because the last
thing
I can afford is a whopping premium!
So I'm back in aviation after three decades and working on a Private,
flying
on a Class III Medical.

If I had my private all this would be moot. I'd just go pick up the 415
and
Bob's Your Uncle. Regrettably, this airplane came along before I was
ready
for it, and now
I've got to scramble. Well, she's more than worth it!

Before I'd lose this ship I'll couple up my car hauler and trailer her up
here with the wings off. But that's not how I want to make the
acquaintance
of this airplane, following
behind me up the interstate lashed to a trailer. I've got a little
history
with this particular ship and I'm aiming to fly her home. But I sure need
some serious help keeping straight with The Authorities.

Another Forum member suggested I find a pilot to fly out with me. Good
idea

and I'll
investigate that approach. But it still doesn't solve the general problem

for others. A prospective
aviator ought to be able to buy a plane, get the training, and be secure
that when they finish training they'll
have an easy way to a check ride. Perhaps one way might be for the FAA to

allow a long-distance cross country direct
to an SLA check pilot as long as the student has passed the SLA Knowledge
Test and his local non-SLA CFI is willing to endorse him
for long-distance cross country flight.

Great to hear from you.

Robert
