Coupers,
Three bits of advice that I have always remembered about carb heat from
my student pilot days:
1. Carb heat should be full on or full off -- never in between. If you
ice up with partial carb heat you might not have enough engine power to
generate heat to melt the ice.
2. Apply full carb heat before you reduce power below the green. When
approaching an airport for landing I apply carb heat on the turn to
downwind, then reduce power opposite my landing point.
3. Always check the carb heat as part of your run up. Watch for the RPM
drop, make sure it works, then turn it off. As a matter of practice, I
try to make the carb heat check the last item in my run up. That way if
I have generated ice during my taxi out or during my run up I can melt
it with high RPM while still on the ground. I would never takeoff with
the carb heat on because I would not be able to generate the full power
of the engine.
