That makes me feel better.  One could top off the battery, then disconnect the 
booster.  Seven amps would still be substantial, but it likely would work.

  I don't think that is the way it works. The B&D Simple Start replenishes 
(tops off) you depleted battery, then the starting is done as usual, not 
through the cig lighter wiring. I'm still investigating.  Now I find that the 
list price is $75 and Ace Hardware sells they on line through Amazon for $55. 
The unit weighs 5 lbs. 
   
  I contacted COLEMAN, and they insist that the COLEMAN POWERMATE is not and 
never has been one of their products, despite the label?! The plot thickens.

    I think I would wonder about trying to crank a starter through the wiring 
that includes the cigarette lighter.

       Jack Stanton told me (off-site) that he had located the Black & Decker 
"Simple Start" at Home Depot @ $49.95, and intends to buy one and try it. I'm 
awaiting his report.  The one you described appears to be the COLEMAN 
Powermate, not the B & D which is a newer and different device. Please confirm 
for potential B&D buyers. 
      BTW, I have no intention to prop start my engine, and the only "qualified 
person in the cockpit" would be me, should I ever reconsider.

        I purchased one, charged it for several days, etc....

        When I needed to start my old van, with a dead battery, it didn't work.


        Perhaps mine is faulty ???, OR not sufficiently charged, etc...perhaps 
I didn't leave it hooked up long enough before trying.... Lights did come on, 
etc..but starter clicked, but wouldn't operate.


        The instructions say that it is useful for a slightly discharged 
battery....ie:  I left on the lights, now my car won't start.....but not 
effective for a dead battery.

        Mine is about 12 inches long; 2" x 2 " , and includes a power 
socket....so I do have a reservoir for light electrical devices....


        I'll give it another try when I find a sightly discharged battery*...


        * I suspect the definition is a battery that will slowly turn over the 
engine but so fast as required to start; as power is also being drawn for 
ignition, warning lights, etc. 

        In an aircraft this may work better, as the ignition system is operated 
by magnetos, and if you get any turn over, so the magnetos spin, the aircraft 
engine should start.

        AND, it is easy to Prop start our small engines,...BUT it is dangerous 
for in-experienced folks, so Be careful. Don't do it by yourself....always have 
a qualified person in the cockpit operating the controls when prop starting.
