John and all,

I'm not trying to flame you here, but your information is not correct.

An IA not only can, but in many cases, must perform the work. Also, an
I.A. must hold an A&P since eligibilty for becoming an IA requires that:

"The applicant must hold a current mechanic's
certificate, with airframe and powerplant ratings, that has
been in effect for at least three years. The applicant must
have been actively engaged in maintaining certificated
aircraft for at least the two-year period before applying."

"PRIVILEGES OF AN IA.
A. When exercising the privileges of an IA, the holder
may:
• Inspect and approve for return to service major
repairs and major alterations, if the work was done
according to technical data approved by the
Administrator
• Perform an annual inspection
• Perform or supervise a progressive inspection"

(This is all straight out of 8300.10 CHG 12 Chapter 26 & 27.)

Just thought this needed to be cleared up.

Tom
