Yes, it matters to the engine.  Weight--or viscosity--requirement for a
particular engine doesn't change with new oil technology, assuming one
remains with the single weight oils.  I don't think it wise to use a heavier
than specified weight, especially in the winter, or a lighter than specified
in the summer.  But the new additives are shown to have an anti-corrosion
and wear benefit.
