Bart: Changing from one brand to another or from one viscosity to another is not much of an issue these days. I think the idea is rotted in the days of detergent and non-detergent automotive oils. One thing to avoid is changing to AD oil after hundreds of hours operating on straight mineral oil.
That said, I, for the life of me, cannot understand the fascination with 100 wt oil. Unless you live in Tucson and it's summer, 80 wt is plenty. The added viscosity only delays oil pressure buildup and adds pumping load. The Phillips 20w-50 is a good year round choice and isn't all that expensive (compared to Shell 15W-50). I see no reason not to stick with it. I have been asked if I want to start using Aeroshell 100 at my next oil change. The airplane is located in Florida and I am told most people here use the Aeroshell. I don't think it is a good idea to switch viscosities, or so I have been told in the past. What is the current thinking on this subject and does anybody have a preference for either engine oil?
