Ditto what Lynn said. I plan on 4 hours per cylinder if the aircraft is
already un-cowled, etc. for work or an annual. If there are no major problems
with the cylinders there are decent shops out there that will overhaul them for
$350-$400 per jug. Just remember they are brought to serviceable limits, not
new. Consider how much time you hope is left on the engine when you decide
whether to go with new or overhauled. Also, don't forget about things like
broken baffling, cracked exhaust flanges and whatnot. They are hiding in there,
I assure you.

A for doing the work yourself under the supervision of an A&P... If you don't
already have an A&P friend, don't worry. You will find we are generally a
friendly bunch. Several things you will notice about us: We don't allow just
anyone to use our tools, and there is always a fridge in the shop. We are happy
and smile when tasty beverages magically appear at quitting time. :-)))
