There are good reasons for creating the files from a designer's pencil
drawings. Though how to introduce a new tool into an organization can be real
tricky.
Many years ago there was a calendar given out by some company. It featured
"Bull of the Woods" which was a cartoon. It made fun of the little personal
problems you would face on the shop floor. Not very scientific, but very
primate.
So here is the scene;
Three experienced designer/engineers sitting around designing a manifold
(drinking coffee) for an advanced gizmo. In walks the new guy carrying a
laptop. Bull (boss of the designer/engineers) sizes the new guy up, notices
that he doesn't have pencils in his pocket protector, matter of fact this
"whipper snapper" ain't even got a pocket protector! Bull looks at the
notebook computer, he is becoming suspicious, he thinks to himself 'I bet this
geek thinks he is Prometheus bringing fire from the gods to us poor slobs'
(Bull is a well read luddite). He says to the new guy "I'm glad you are here
we need your help". Bull details out what he needs drawn. Of course he
supplies bad information which is the designer/engineers equivilent of sending
some one for a bucket of steam or to go get the sky hook. The drawing is
funny, a valve actually pierces an important bulkhead. Bull and his cronies
have a good laugh.
A year later Bull must report to his new boss.........
Is the problem only lack of money? I hope so. At least it would have a simple
solution.
