I've been using the Dell LCD listed below now for about a week.
I gotta say, it is gorgeous!
Here is the relevant lines from my XF86Config-4 file.
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1200" "1280x1024" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
Unlike the CRTs I've worked with, this LCD always expands the total
image to fill the screen. Due to the wide nature of this screen
that means that the sizes 1280x1024, etc all end up looking
stretched horizontally. The only mode that looks right is
1920x1200. I can live with that. (I haven't explored whether
I can specify arbitrary combinations of numbers that would work
out the the same aspect ratio.)
This monitor isn't paper thin. More like 3 inches, not including
the stand. And it runs warm to the touch. And it is pretty heavy,
tho not as bad as a 19 inch CRT.
A disadvantage of an LCD is that I cannot perch things on top
like I used to do with the CRT. (Photos and clock.) Darn. :-)
I love this monitor and recommend it for anyone who can free
up $1200.
