USB2 is preferable. USB1.1 is limited to 12Mbps which is the threshold for 802.11b. 802.11G is capable of moving up to 54Mbps or greater depending upon the technology. 802.11b will be cheaper and suffice for surfing the net and downloading stuff but file transfers between PC's will be mind numbingly slow.
As for chipsets.. research what the adapters use. Prism2 is popular, RALINK has linux support, and there's nearly always an answer on Google.
