Is there something can do to repair it?  ( like write zeros to it (dd
if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda) or something?)

There is a utility called MHDD that can remap bad sectors, amongst other things. It can be downloaded by itself from hddguru.com. However, I use it as part of the The Ultimate Boot CD which can be found at ultimatebootcd.com. It has MHDD and tens (hundreds?) of other useful free and Free utilities on it, including a decent graphical live Linux.

That being said, I can't imagine even considering eating a drive while under warranty because of the hassle. Just return it to Maxtor.

fry's was not a happy stop for me :(

I've _never_ had a good stop at Fry's. In fact, there is a running joke amongst my friends about "The Fry's Conspiracy" wherein the employees of Fry's are actively trying to hinder my computer purchasing needs; they are invariably out of or have stopped carrying whatever it is I need when I go there. Sometimes the conspiracy infiltrates other stores even... Most notably Barnes and Noble...
