On the maintenance charges, he did not say, other than the car sat inside.

I was surprised when I found out that his batteries are Car Quest 100 AH deep cycle, presumably made by Deka. So these are 12V floodies, apparently, probably similiar to the US Battery 1450. I was surprised since I had envisioned a pack of 6V floodies along the lines of US2200s.

He seemed interested in the EV Discussion List when I mentioned it, so he may have already signed up.

Could the 'sat all winter' be a contributor; did he do maintenance
charges at least monthly?

More feedback from the guy that has an Elcon that gassed the batteries

He said this is the only charger he's had, at least for this EV, and I
think this is the only car-sized EV he's had. His roundtrip daily
commute is 10 miles. Lost a battery after about five months of use
starting in April, although the car had sat through the previous
winter (2011/2). I suspect his batteries are from the summer or fall
of 2011. So my guess is he's got 1.5 year-old batteries with maybe
2-3K miles on them (assuming ~200-250 workdays @ 10mi/day + misc.
miles). Kind of young to be gassing so heavily, since new-ish
batteries should be able to reach the USBattery-recommended constant
voltage setpoint pretty easily without a lot of amps. However, I am
aware of USBattery recommending (at least at one time) an equalization
charge current of 11A, which if that is dialed in as the third-stage
constant current phase, that would produce a lot of gassing and stink.
It seemed that USBattery changed their charging recommendations a year
or two ago, from IU to IUI, so it's hard to guess what is dialed into
the charger. I'd really like to measure one with a voltmeter and
clip-on ammeter.
