Too many read more into what JR says than he really says. First, he has stated many times that he is talking about LiFePO4 cells. Second of all, he doesn't take as you say, "common sense" which isn't backed up by some real world testing. See what "common sense" did for Boeing? All they had to do was to add a single cell to their pack so that they quit overcharging the cells slightly each and every time the plane landed and the APU came on and the fires wouldn't have happened. You have to either destroy some batteries in testing or have someone who has done so and documented it to get a better sense of how to care for the cells in question. After all, isn't this what Tesla did with their more volatile LiCo chemistry cells? IIRC, Jack has said that he has personally destroyed something on the order of $20,000 of LiFePO4 cells so far, not all at once either. That translates to a whole lot of learning that not destroying cells can't teach anyone.
