I remembered some discussion of Crown batteries, so I dug down into the EVDL
archives. Most of this is from 2008.

>From Roger Stockton: "Crown seems to make a decent battery, but you need to
properly charge it or it will not perform well at all.

"Two things I've noticed with the Crowns is that it is normal (I am told it
is a residue from the manufacturing process) for there to be some sort of
black residue in the electrolyte (almost tar-like), though it seems to be
more evident when they are new and/or not being fully charged, and that they
may not charge fully when using a charger that uses a dV/dt termination
criterion (the voltage goes flat well before the battery is fully charged)."

>From Mike Willmon : "I have a set of the Crown CR225's in the Electrabishi
right now and they seem to perform about as I expected. I limit to 300 amps
and 350 is about as high as you can practically pull from them without
sagging them down too far."

>From Norm Woodward: "I have Crown batteries in my Xebra ... Let's just say
that whatever brand of battery you are thinking of buying make sure that the
charger you are planning to use is approved by the battery manufacturer or
they may refuse to honor your warranty."

>From Larry Pratt: "I am currently using them in my EV .. I only had 2.5
months of runtime before the cold hit ... I have replaced 2 of them with no
hassle. I don“t know what the failure rate on lead acids are but I am
feeling good about my purchase."

>From Larry Pratt, about 8 months later: "Brand:Crown Model:cr-222 Volts:6
# of failures in first year:4"
