I hear (right here ;-) that hydrostatic drives are painfully inefficient. The old GE Elec-Trak tractors can usually mow a couple of acres on 6 golf car batteries, even when the batteries have a few seasons' worth of use. That's a benchmark of sorts, I'd say.
