I dont konw when those models came out, but at least 30 years ago...

That would explain my observations. My meter probably dated from the
1950s; I acquired the property in 1976 and the meter was not new then.

My home in Robbinsdale MN was built in 1954. It appeared to have the original meter, and it ran backwards when I connected my PV panels and grid-tie inverter. It was still there when I sold the house in 1998.

My current home was built in 1994, and had a mechanical meter. I don't know if it could run backwards. But the utility changed it to an electronic meter around 2000; and it does *not* run backwards. This is the one that also had a lithium cell that died. It apparently couldn't save or report KWH readings without it; so they "guessed" until I complained and they replaced it.

Yes, but they considered my data "weak". I had an old mechanical meter on the garage circuit. To test, I turned off all power in the house, and charged my EV, and compared its reading to the house meter. Mine was 10% lower. Then I had to reset everything in the house (clocks, etc.) So I only did the test a couple times.

Perhaps; but I didn't pursure it. It was only costing me about $10 extra a month for the ~4 months it took to get them to fix it. In hindsight, maybe I should have elevated the case, as they no doubt did it to other people as well.
