What is "when in heavy traffic and on curves you will be paying attention" but conjecture? And "at least I do" is personal experience. If a Tesla on autopilot is moving at 45 mph (reasonable for a winding road) and the autopilot has been handling the driving chore flawlessly for an hour or two with little input from the driver, how closely is the driver likely to be paying attention? If it takes that driver a half-second to respond when the autopilot screws up - and I'll bet it would be more than that - the car will have traveled 33 more feet in that time. That's more than enough distance to go off the road and slam into a tree - or run down a kid playing in his front yard. IMO, technical jiggery-pokery in a vehicle should improve driver attention. Autopilot suppresses it. Colin Kidder's discussion of this was brilliant, BTW. To be fair, similar gimmicks in other vehicles probably do too. The main difference between Tesla and them is that NO AUTOMAKER BUT TESLA tacitly but actively encourages their drivers to believe that their cars can actually drive themselves. Try this. In your favorite search engine, type the following query: Tesla drives itself site:youtube.com Now try ithe same query with Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, whatever. See how the results differ.
