I've always found this form of "liberal" position to be naive in that all insults become truth too easily, when defamation does not exist. I guess it's consistent in this way, if you assume all people want to insult or have to be insulted to learn or exchange information. But it's also ugly as there are ways to make progress in discourse, life, sciences etc. without putting people down; even if sometimes a line has to be drawn.
