For many thousands of years people have assumed that their fellow human
beings were conscious when they were behaving intelligently but were not
conscious when they weren't, such as when they were sleeping or dead; and
yet they knew absolutely nothing about the circuitry or the architecture of
anybody's brain or even knew that the brain had something to do with
thinking. Were they making a mistaken assumption for all these millennia,
should they have adopted a more solipsistic attitude?
