Well maybe they've turned 75% of the matter in von Neumann probes (after all once they start reproducing there's no way to stop them) and you've discovered the nature of dark matter.

I'd have a hard time understanding why they wouldn't, after all it's not as if it would be expensive, ifyou can control matter at the atomic level then a Von Neumann Probe would literally be dirt cheap
