You can have a non-local effect whenever something depends on both x_1 and x_2, when these refer to separate locations, without any local communication between the points. Given points A and B, if whatever happens at A cannot affect B, and vice versa, then the relation between A and B is non-local. The points need not be spacelike separated. Bruce Can you give an example of something depending on two separate locations where there is no communication between the points?
