In Spybot, first turn on "advanced" mode from the pull down "mode" menu. Then click on the "TOOLS" menu on the left side of the program. You should see a bunch of different tools with checkboxes next to them. Check the HOSTS box and now there will be a hosts menu below the tools "button". Click on the "hosts file" option on the left menu and you can then use the "add spybot s&d hosts list" option. This will put the hosts file on your local pc where you can then copy it off to your DNS server.
WARNING: if you use a very large HOST files on windows xp (and maybe also windows 2000) you MUST disable the "dns client" service in your services control panel. The "dns client" service is not needed - it just locally caches DNS lookups on your PC and gets overwhelmed by the large file. With the "dns client" service disabled, DNS still works fine, it just forces the PC to look up the dns each time (instead of searching through a cache). I can't seem to find it -----Original Message----- From: Alverson, Tom [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 10:58 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: adware defense One thing that will help is to get the special "HOSTS" file from spybot that routes many known adware sites to 127.0.0.1 (this points back to the local machine and keeps the pc from contacting adware sites). If you can put that HOSTS file on your DNS server (rather than having to put it on each PC) you can block a lot of adware that way.
