I don't do brick level backup so before it became clear that it was a user
error, I started making PSTs of people's mail with exemerge in case more people
complained of message loss. One of the mailboxes gave me this
[15:46:38] Error copying messages from folder '\Sent Items'
(MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
[15:46:38] Trying to copy messages in folder '\Sent Items', individually. To
avoid duplicates in the target store, messages will be merged and not copied
into the target store.
[15:46:46] Error copying message with subject 'RE: I'm back' in folder '\Sent
Items'. (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
[15:46:47] Error copying message with subject 'Please disregard 2nd peer review
request' in folder '\Sent Items'. (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
[15:46:47] Error copying message with subject 'RE: Classroom Reservation' in
folder '\Sent Items'. (MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
There are tons of these "Error copying message" messages in ExMerge.log for
this one user. What would case them and how can it be resolved?
I also got some of these
[14:59:29] Copying data from mailbox 'Matthew Hui' ('MHUI') on Server
'TPICKERING' to file 'D:\MAILBOXES\MHUI.PST'.
[14:59:29] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft
Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct
permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)
[14:59:29] Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox 'Mazie Hui'
('MHUI').
The info store is running and the account I'm using to access the mailbox is
the same one I've used to successfully export almost every other mailbox. What
would cause this and how can it be resolved?
Again I'm using Exchange Server 2003.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks all for your feedback. The message is coming through loud and clear -
It's not my server. That's a relief. Now - how to politely tell the users -
you screwed up. :)

[1] You use public folders, whether you know so, or not. On Exchange 2003,
free/busy data, schedule+ data, offline address books, and other pieces of
system level information are stored in public folders. You have no choice.
[2] All of the event log entries you have posted are innocuous and noise.
Nothing more, nothing less.
[3] This is a user problem. Period. Exchange doesn't lose data.

I wouldn't think they could have deleted all of their calendar entries that
easily.
I've been going through my application event log to see if there are any
smoking guns. I found the following (the last one seems like it might be the
most relevant)
Source: MSExchange IS Mailbox
Event ID: 1147
Category: Rules
Error 1245 while disabling rule on public folder with rule ID 1-58F827. The
folder ID of the public folder is in the data section of this event.
We don't use public folders so this seems an unlikely problem.

Event ID: 1517
Windows saved user ANSCI\AEDon on registry while an application or service was
still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.
AEDon is not one of the accounts that is having problems with deleted messages.
A few days ago there were a bunch of messages like this
Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox
Category: Views
Event ID: 1173
Type: Warning
Error 0x6bb deleting unused restricted views from folder 1-266CC1E on database
"Storage Group 2\Mailbox Store". Microsoft Exchange Information Sore will try
to delete the view again at the next maintenance interval.
Both users reporting problems were in Storage Group 2.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

People "accidentally" delete things on mobile devices all the time, it only
takes a slightly off keystroke or swipe of the finger to do so on such a small
screen.

No delegates (I assume you are talking about the kind that can access another
person's mailbox). By mobile devices - you're talking about something like a
phone or are you talking about a laptop? The person who lost her calendar is
definitely on a laptop. I don't recall if she has a phone or not. How would
these devices cause problems?

In the last couple of days I've had two users tell me they have had mail
disappear. Any suggestions what might be happening? Mail store corrupt? I
have Exchange 2003 where do I proceed from here? Thanks for your help.
