Like legally, if someone is on "medical leave" in order for them to be
officially on leave, they are not supposed to be doing ANY work, including
reading email.  There are many companies that take hardware away (laptops,
blackberries, etc) and remove remote access, so that the "temptation" is
removed...  your HR department should be able to clarify what they would be
comfortable with, and the employee should be able to say whether they wish
to log in and clean out the mailbox regularly.

If you leave it open, you need to warn the employee that they should expect
to spend a week cleaning out mail to PSTs once they come back, so that they
will be able to send mail once they return...
