If your pc does not turn on, it is simply the power supply unit that
may have gone dead. Second chance that motherboard is faulty but
usually when something goes wrong with the motherboard, you still be
able to power up... It won't just boot...

Decent power supply units start at $45, any of your computer guys can
remove the old unit and install a new one without any problem
(however, it is better first to open up the desktop and see what type
of power unit you have, some desktops have non-common design but still
it is easy to find a replacement).

Anyway, for the future it is always good to buy a USB hard drive and
regulary make back-ups... USB HDD are cheap these days...
