If you have a very large disk, the disk translation can place the kernel
above the 1024 cylinder limit of lilo, giving this problem.

One solution is to create a 10MB partition at the beginning of the drive and
make it /boot.

Can you boot from the boot disk? Using the linear option?

If you can boot from the boot disk:

After you log in,

chroot /

Then,

lilo

Lilo might barf and give you a useful error message.

(I just now did this on a botched Mandrake 5.3 install on a 386.)

Try to boot again if lilo runs successfully.

Does anyone know if the chos program in 6.1 gets around this? Any other
practical methods of booting other than lilo?

Have fun,
Hoyt.
