I would go by what the BIOS is reporting. I'd still suggest
putting a /boot partition of 5-10 megs as the first
partition. Since this is a fresh install, just wipe the
drive, fdisk/mbr to kill the "bad" lilo and reinstall with
a separate /boot partition.
