Gentlemen:
Thanks for the responses. I will try to comment/respond to your questions
together here.
Bug Hunter: I have not tried this, but would there be a difference between
a fresh install of Mandrake 6.0 and Mandrake 6.1? 6.0 is fine; 6.2 hangs on
'LI'.
Mike: The drive is clean; just Linux is on it. The drive is an IDE IBM
DeskStar 9.1GB, configured as follows:
BIOS reports 1027, 255, 63 (LBA). Curiously, fdisk says 1108, even if you
force it to 1024.
The partitions are:
hda1: cyl. 1-384 (approx.) root
hda2 cyl. 385-424 (approx.) swap
hda3: cyl. 386-1108 (approx.) /usr
the cylinder spans provided are approximate as I have noted, but I am
certain that the root partition (which contains /boot) is totally below cyl.
1024. The partitions were made with Linux's fdisk. Lilo.conf contains,
among other things:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=5
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.13-7mdk
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.13-7mdk.img
label linux
root=/dev/hda1
read-only
Sorry, I can't remember it totally; I am unsure of the initrd line. I have
also tried 'linear', 'append="hda=1108,255,63"', and
'append="hd=1108,255,63"'
I do also have a Symbios SCSI in the system, but have tried installing with
and without; also, as I said, 6.0 went in without a hitch with SCSI present.
Steve: As I stated above, i believe the kernel is well below cylinder 1024
(this area would appear to be occupied by /usr), and Lilo runs itself during
installation (though I did re-run it, and even installed a down-rev version
of it and re-ran it as well to test with no success). 6.0 boots; 6.1 hangs
at 'LI'.
Thanks all. Please let me know if you have anymore observations/questions.
I am sort of in limbo here, and appreciate your help.
Tim
