I cannot try this till I get home from work. Thanks for the response.
I do not understand though, why the the vmware win98 works ok but the booted
win98 does not. The windows user name and password are the same as the the
vmware windows username and password. I know that I may not understand the
background communication between the clients, but logic would suggest that
what works for one should work for the other.

From your Linux box try typing
"smbclient -L SAMBABOX -U WINDOWSUSER"
Where "Sambabox" is the Netbios name of your Samba machine as specified
in the smb.conf.
WINDOWSUSER is the name of the USER you logged in as, at your Windows
computer.
Remember that every time you attempt to connect to the Samba machine
from Windows, Windows itself sends the SAME username and password you
entered when you first logged in to Samba.
This username/password must correspond EXACTLY with the SAMBA (not
LINUX) user you created with smbadduser (or with the newer smbpasswd -a
WINDOWSUSER ).
Linux users ARE NOT Samba users and vice versa...
You also might want to change the username/password hashing level in
Samba to 8 to avoid character case problems...

Subject: [expert] Samba confused.
I have samba set up (or not as the case may be) on mdk8.0, which is a
NFS server. On client A, I have dual booting mdk8.0/Win98. When booted
in to mdk, I have vmware which has win98 as a virtual machine. The
virtual win98 is set up to access the shares on the samba server and
print to this as well. All works fine.
However, when booted to win98, it cannot acces the samba server as
passwords are not accepted. The passwords accross the win98's and mdk's
are seamless. Each time I access the shared area on the win98 I get the
annoying password box, any password I type is rejected. I have added the
key 'enablecleartextpassword' in the registry, although I have not done
this on the vmware win98, this did not change anything, so I took the
entry out again.
(I can ping, telnet and ftp from the Win98 client the NFS server)
Does anyone have any idea what is hapening, after an evening of trying I
am ?*!!??$% the system.
Please help....TIA
Dave.
