No, this is an attempt to connect to the LOCAL Samba server called "SAMBABOX" so that the passwords can be checked to see if they are correctly working.
Samba doesn't work very well with spaces in the user names for various reasons. It should be avoided if possible. Spaces in the machine names wreak havok. Windows passwords are stored in the USERNAME.PWL file. Delete the file and Windows will recreate it upon next login. -JMS -----Original Message----- From: Randy Kramer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 19, 2001 12:16 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Samba confused. Aside: Isn't "Sambabox" the Netbios name of the Windows machine in this case? The Sambabox that smbclient is trying to connect to is the Windows box where WINDOWUSER exists? Statement: My Windows user names are typically of the form <first name> <M.I.> <last name> (with spaces. Fortunately, this will work if enclosed in quotes after the -U. Piggybacked Question: Does anybody know how to change the user name on a Windows box short of reinstalling Windows from scratch? (Knowing what I know now, I'll consider changing my user name to a single word. However, Windows picks up the user name and uses it for some things (like the author of a document in Word 97, IIRC) where it is nice to have your full name specified (instead of something like rhkramer).
