Hey guys, I've being following this thread on and off, and I think you're correct by going to the karting mags. I don't think FormulaCar would be the bets bet, as everyone who reads it is already a believer in an existing open wheel formula. I think that Super Kart Illustrated would be the best bet, along with Grassroots or even RACER. You're looking for new people, so go to the rags that reach those people. Grassroots reaches racers who could be convinced to go faster in a real race car, and RACER reaches fans who may want to get involved.
FCM is still an option, as we do distribute the mags to karters and fans. Also, I would be willing to 'sponsor' this marketing campaign with a 50% discount on all advertising. The bigger, the better will help. If you're thinking about a 3" classified, this would give you a 6". Here's the big question though: what is your message? Direct them to a website? Push the slogan? 'Come see a race near you'? How about a Crew for a Day program....'experience' the F500 community first-hand! I think you need to really think about the other sides of the marketing.
