I don't know about you but I never have had a problem with my Rotax. Of course maybe that is because I running very close to the stock jets. Also, I use 89 octane unleaded gas. The factory only requires unleaded 87 octane pump gas. Also I use the best resister plugs which the system was made to use. Haven't had to change the plugs in almost three years. Plus I use the stock Rotax TRA clutch which again was designed for that engine and it works great. I will admit it is very expense, but I bought it with the used engine I got from a bent sled.

In Solo II we put electric fans for the radiator. My car has a radiator from a Kawi 750cc Ninja. In between runs I plug a small tractor batter in and keep the fan running. You don't see the temp gauge go down until you start it up again and it drops about twenty degrees. I do agree that bike engines are cheap, but you need a car with real shocks and a lot of other things to make it work right. I have owned a Formula Ford, an old FV and now the F500. I have worked on MG's in my teens and had one of the first CSP Honda's in New England with twin webers, etc. Also I helped my friend take apart his GT-40 in my younger days! So I may like my simple formula car, but I know how to work on many types of cars if I needed to.

The point is F500's do not have a lot of other expense pieces that others car have. If I had the money I would have Bill Gendren at Small Fortune Racing build me one of his new DSR Dragon's, which at $56,000 is a great car and I have pictures of it being built. So as others have said you want a bike engine there are many classes to go to. But if we get SCCA to allow real shocks, etc. I may change my mind. But hell could freeze over first!

PS: I sold my FV and bought the Zink and have 5 NER Fmod Championships, plus a Divisional and a National Tour Wins! All for a third of what a SoloV or Formula Ford, etc would cost!
Also what I would think a real good bike powered F500 would cast to convert!

Why would they not be as simple with bike motors?
There would no clutch to tune, no jets to monkey with, and if guessed wrong now, squeak!!!!
 There's no temperamental 2 stroke....
Sorry, the only logic that follows is that it may be more simple because people are used to the shuffle, and afraid of the unknown....

If I wanted a car with a bike engine I would find a Formula Ford that needed an engine and gearbox and put a bike motor in it! That would lower the cost
big time for driving a car like that.
But putting the bike engine in a F500 will bring out all the extra cost that
everyone forgets they get started on the car of their dreams. Before I
would put a ton of money into my 89 Zink I would take that hard earned money
and find one of the newer cars like Jay's or from Q!

Also, there are places I have run in a Solo II (non SCCA events) were in the
average F440/F500 you always want both hands on the wheel. In Solo II not
shifting is the way to go in these cars! Every you shift you add fractions
of second which is the difference between winning and loosing!

Bob, not to be an ass, but why do you think the sowmobile 4 stroke cvt
would be cheaper???

fmod wrote: John there is no one cheaper than me, but
many of us went to F440/F500 not
just for the 2 stroke engine, but the CVT! If I were a younger man and
were
going to me in this for another 20 years, I would push for the 4stroke
snowmobile engine very hard! It will not be easy to come up with the
correct size or engine to use, but by staying with the cvt concept it
would
still be a lot cheaper than going to a motorcyle engine!

Wrong, the real starting point is considering which 4 stroke snowmoble
engine with cvt that we or future F500 owners are going to want to
use!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm cheap. 8-)

I figure it would be cheapest to get a motorbike engine, but a 4 stroke
snowmobile engine could be interesting.
