Jay,
Just trying to see a fair comparison.
Absolutely no interest myself in ever having a bike motor again.
Been there, done that.

You forgot to include the cost of a tear down and reassy of the new bike motor to blueprint it to run with the fast guys ( degree the cams, measure and match springs, trick valve job, etc. )

Afterall, most could just put a gently used Rotax in their car w/out all that rebuilding to run midpack.

Why are the new Rotaxes so expensive?

Brand new Kaws were $1100 each when Ray Little bought his production run from Kawasaki.
Shouldn't motors be getting cheaper with modern mfg methods?

There isn't anything in these 2-stroke motors compared to a bike motor. 1/2 the pistons, 2 less camshafts, no valve springs or followers, 19 fewer valves :->

Do most used Rotaxes really need a crankshaft?

"rebuild engine complete, with new cylinder liners, pistons, rings &crankshaft. $1200"

To be fair:

What will the price be for a rebuilt GSXR600 be with all the valves bent and some valve seats needing replacement after an overrev? Then new camshafts, followers, and springs, New crank and rods...4 pistons plus rings and 4 pins.

New clutch disk, throwout bearing, shifting forks and dogs for the tranny.

Then finally labor, because I'm sure fewer people will be rebuilding their own motors and tranny's.

Or perhaps we are in the age of the throw-away motor?

The price of repairing my friend's Suzuki Hayabusa was what scared me.

I checked with him again today and the total repair bill for the bike falling over $8000, the $3500 I remembered was only labor. He was stopped at a stopsign and a car tapped his muffler from an angle on one side and knocked him over.

He obtained all the repair parts for the repair shop fom a discount supplier(Ayers) to keep the bike from being totalled by the insurance company

A new Suzuki Hayabusa MSRP is about $11,300.
A GSXR-600 MSRP is $8900.

He was able to extract the price of the new discounted exhaust system for me and it was $1400. That included 2 mufflers and 2 intermediate pipes.

BTW, You need to include at least one big muffler and dry sump to your GSXR600 conversion costs :->

It will be interesting to see if you can buy a bike performance header at mass production prices that will fit the F500 chassis. That will help keep the costs down.

Until Brad Huelings starts making the header of the week for 8 more HP. :->

Chuck
