the one time I visited Britain (on business) I stayed in a small town near London in a small hotel, and the food was outstanding! Of course one of the folks who set up our trip was local and he recommended our lodging. It did buck the stereotype of bad British food though. The Brits and French have been trashing each other since Day One. Their traded barbs are pretty amusing. I get a kick out of how the Brits will deliberately find an alternative pronounciation for French words: e.g. fillet, being sure to pronounce the hard 't'.
