I have read that 80 to 90 percent of Israel's population is Ashkenazi, who are thought to be caucasoid descendants of the eastern-European Khazars, who never lived in the Near- or Middle- East, and who converted to Judaism as late as the 7th or 8th century CE. Only the remaining 10 to 20 percent are Sephardic, who actually *did* originate in or near the region now known as Israel, and who (I have read) are currently treated as distinctly second-class citizens in Israel.
