I do seem to recall Charlie being ambivalent about the Sidhis at teacher meeting.

Thanks for sharing that - I never saw Charlie but I had a friend from Kentucky who was at MIU for about 8 years - he saw Charlie every time he could - he just loved those meetings. He is the one I mentioned who was present when Charlie had a little confrontation with Robin Carlsen. He also has said several times that Charlie was not too keen on Maharishi giving out the yoga sutras, but I don't know if that was something Charlie talked about in groups or more private settings.

I particularly
recall Charlie being
upset by the movement raising the price of TM to $400
(or it might
have been even the hike to $128). He said since we
were in a
recession this was a bad business move. And indeed
it resulted in
fewer initiations. I missed the heyday where those
who became
teachers in the early 70s did 100s or even 1000s of
initiations.
By the time I became a teacher you would get a small
group in for
the intro lecture and a few of those would come back
for the prep
lecture including some who had heard the intro another
time. Then
a few of those would sign up. By then many of the
teachers who
had experience the larger classes needed to take jobs
to survive.

As for things like the stambhan (the ferry captain
staring into
space) that has been mentioned in books and talked
about here and
it was one of his favorite tales as Charlie weekend
gatherings
which I always attended. In Seattle there would be
as many 400
people attending those and often included catered
dinners. The
SRM center was still a favorite hangout for many
TM'ers who
weren't so keen on the scientific approach and
liked the more
spiritual stuff. Marie Connors ran it out of her
house and we had
interesting group sessions. I believe she set up the
Charlie
Lutes lectures too.

Charlie became sorta "persona non grata"
with the TMO later in the
70s.

BTW, in 1978 Seattle and the state of Washington had a
big influx
of teachers to as some kind of AE thing. Groups of
governors were
dispatched to communities around the state (where they
almost
starved to death because they didn't have money
for food).
Maharishi actually snuck into Seattle late in the
summer for a big
meeting. It was very secret because I went to the
Center for the
teachers meeting and no one was there. My house mate
was not at
home either so I inquired to some friends (also
teachers) as to
where he was. They had not left for the meeting with
Maharishi
which was being held at the Olympic hotel but told me
what was
up. This was all kept secret because the TMO feared
he would be
served with a subpoena due to the religious case going
on. I left
the ballroom and called some dear friends to let them
know to come
down to the Olympic to see MMY. Other teachers were
doing the
same. BTW, MMY was chatting on stage with Rabbi
Levine, the uncle
of a long time family friend of mine.

I was not yet a governor though I had completed a
phase or two of
the Sidhis by being on a Citizens course which were
also thrown
open to teachers who didn't have time for a long
course. But I
was allowed into the meeting with MMY on Monday
morning at a hall
near the Seattle TM center.

Please tell more about both these things:

I also muse at the stories even heard

Charlie Lutes about MMY's used of stambhan
(actually not
very hard to do).

The real mistake was the profiteering of TM
which Charlie
expressed concerns about at our teacher's
meetings with
him.

FWIW, I believe

that MMY was once asked

what happened if a crook became enlightened
and he

responded they

would become an enlightened crook. My
tantra

guru samskaras don't

necessarily all burn away with
enlightenment.

That's the deeper

meaning of "chopping wood and carrying

water."

When I was around MMY he did indeed illicit a
great

amount of

shakti and I could easily see the celestial
glow

around. He would

have been a pretty lousy monk to not have
achieved

some

enlightenment during his years at the math.
I

also muse at the

stories even heard personally from Charlie
Lutes about

MMY's used

of stambhan (actually not very hard to do).
