Actually, the boomers were *very* service-minded. Ever hear of the Peace Corps? Ever hear of the civil rights movement? There was all kinds of grassroots volunteer activity as well, running soup kitchens, caring for the homeless, advocating for the poor, and so on. Plus which, there's a trend today for boomer retirees to take on second "careers" in various areas of volunteer service, since they're more financially secure and generally in better health than previous generations were at their age.
