Actually, following the Katrina debaucle, American Heartworm Association
revised protocol. Now its 1 shot; wait a month; then 2 shots one day apart.
Also protocol recommends treating with HW Prev meds PRIOR to shots in order to
kill off larvae and make adult HW sterile. Finally, there is a parasite that
lives inside the HW that it is now recommended be killed by doxyciclin
injections prior to full HW treatment. These are nasty creatures.

Problem is that they don’t really have a viable treatment for cats yet.

I know w/dogs, it's a series of 2 painful shots on either side of their heart,
and bedrest for 6 weeks afterwards.

Very important about the bedrest..........

When we received heartworm pos. dogs in the shelter where i worked, they didn't
want to treat them until they were in a home environment, because the kennel
stress was too much.

Or, we would try to find them a foster home for their treatment.

Hi,

The reason I suspected heartworm is because he had a transient cough most of
his short life. I knew cats could get heartworm and I always worried about
this. She mainly used the revolution because of his ear mites. I am always
battling these here. She may well be the vet that told me it might be time to
pts Junior. I am glad I did not listen. He is a fighter. I knew one tretment
would not do anything even if he had heart worms. This is the URI that I think
was the beginning of my FELV infection with my cats. It seems to have started
at this time.
